Frequently Asked Questions about Spray Tanning

Tips PRIOR to Spray Tanning

Shave or Wax 12 to 18 hours prior to our Spray Tan session. Hairs block the solution. Allow time for pores to close for a smoother overall appearance. Also the extra time allows the skin to return to its normal pH level prior to the session.

Exfoliate for a more even, richer tan, and to remove dead skin cells.

Have Clean Skin: Make sure skin is free of perfume, make-up, deodorant, lotion, moisturizer, oil, bronzers, etc., so the Sunless product is not hindered by barriers and can be the most effective. Clean skin reduces the risk of streaking.

Apply Nail Polish to Fingernails and Toenails: Polish helps block solution and prevents yellowing nails.

For those with natural Red and Orange tone skin. A pH Balancing Spray will lower pH to maximize natural Brown and Black skin pigments.

Tips AFTER Spray Tanning

Wear Dark, Loose Fitting Clothing: Dark clothes minimize potential stains from DHA solution. A loose fit reduces clothes rubbing away a fresh tan.

Keep Skin Dry for 6 Hours: Allow the DHA to develop. Wait 6 hours before showering, and avoid sweating, entering any water, or applying makeup. For maximum results, you may wait up to 24 hours to shower. A simple rinse with warm or cool water is best.

Cool or Warm Showers and Blot Dry: Avoid hot showers and vigorous towel drying.

Hydrate Before and After: Hydrated skin simply looks better. Flaky skin sheds and reduces the life of any tan.

Hydrate daily for healthy looking skin.

Avoid Pool Chemicals and Salt Water: Chlorine, Bromine, and Salt Water reduce the effectiveness and cause premature fading of a Sunless tan..

Avoid over Shaving or Scrubs: Protect against exfoliation, which fades Sunless tans.

Moisturize Daily with Oil Free Products: Only use products and body washes that complement Sunless tans.

Products with Mineral Oil and Sodium Laureth Sulfate can significantly reduce the life of a Sunless tan.

How often do I need to tan?

Your skin tans by stimulating the production of melanin (pigmentation) in your skin which leads to a base tan. It is recommended that you tan 3-5 times within an 8 day period to develop a base tan. In order to maintain color, we recommend one visit a week or 2-3 visits a month and don’t forget to use a Tan Extender! These products are essential in helping preserve, protect and prolong the life of your tan!

Do I need a tanning lotion?

Yes! Tanning lotion is a skin care product and they are available for purchase. We will gladly guide you to select a good lotion for your skin. Remember, our skin is the largest organ in our body and it is so important we take care of it properly. Not only do tanning skin care products add vitamins, nutrients and moisture for overall better color, but these products will actually increase your tanning potential 60-70%! Why tan more often when you can get better color, faster with the use of the right skin care products!

Why do I need to wear sunscreen even if I have a sunless tan?

Although you may feel and look like you have a real tan, a sunless tan is only the temporary appearance of a tan and therefore provides your skin with no real sunburn protection. It is still recommended to wear sunscreen when outdoors to protect your skin from overexposure.

Can I work out after an session?

It is best to wait about 6 hours after your Sunless session before partaking in any strenuous activities that may cause perspiration. This will give the DHA time to fully react with skin proteins as well as prevent streaking that could result from excessive perspiration.

How long should I wait after my spray tan session before I shower?

It is best to wait at least 6 hours after the sunless tan application before you shower to give the DHA time to fully react with skin proteins.

How do I prepare for my session?

Arrive showered, shaven, free of make-up, perfume, oil, body sprays, deodorant and moisturizer for optimal results. Some also prefer to exfoliate prior to their sunless session so solution has fresh, less-flaky skin during application. Bring loose, dark fitting clothing for after your session. You will be flaunting a gorgeous tan in just sixty seconds plus dry time for the application. About a total of 10 to 15 minutes with prep and post preparation.

Should I moisturize before I do a spray session?

You should use a moisturizer regularly to keep your skin hydrated and healthy, which will contribute to a more even, natural looking sunless tan. However, it is recommended NOT to apply moisturizers 2 hours prior to sunless tanning and 4 to 6 hours after.

Why is keeping skin moisturized essential to maintain great Sunless results?

It is important to keep skin moisturized after your session as dry, flaky skin will slough off faster and color will fade sooner.

Will the solution from the spray come off on my clothes?

Some of the bronze “cosmetic tint” color may rub off on clothing or bed sheets. This is most likely to happen when you get dressed immediately after tanning. To minimize the chance of the bronzers transferring to clothing, we recommend that you towel dry after your session and wear loose-fitting, darker clothes after your session. The tint is water-soluble. Therefore, in most cases, the color will come out of clothing in the wash.

Why do some self tanners make me turn orange?

It can be a combination of the type of self tanner used and the level of DHA (the active self tanning ingredient). Self Tanners have come a long way since their introduction. Another common reason we see this type of orange color is from pH imbalance in the skin. We always recommend using body washes and soaps that are sulfate and alcohol free. This will not only help keep your pH level balanced, but aid in longer lasting color too! We also offer a pH prep spray before your airbrush tan to balance the protein level in your skin for the most natural looking results!

How frequently do you recommend going in for a spray session? Can I do it several days in a row?

The frequency of Sunless tanning application depends on your skin cell turn over and preference of color intensity. People with quick cell turn-overs may want to do a Sunless session every 3-4 days to keep color fresh, while others may need to apply only once every 10-14 days.
